Friday, as she is known to do, Sheryl got a wild hair. She decided to take our fence matters into her own hands. For some dumb reason, the people who built this house built a 10 foot fence around the back yard. The problem is, a ten foot fence is top-heavy. So, our fence bowed and leaned and looked awful. I kept saying, "We can't afford to fix it this month." Sheryl decided to take matters into her own hands.

On Friday as I drove home she said, "Would you like to know what I did today?" Those words always cause me to sit up and take a deep breath. Usually, it means project time. I got home to find 15 sections of our fence down and ready to be "fixed". She was a major machine!! So, guess what we did most of Saturday? I'm talkin' power tools, circular saws, hammers, nails...just call me "Handy Mannny". Big thanks to Sheryl for tackling this project and for Kevin for coming over and putting in some really hard work! We're saving a lot of money thanks to them!

Note to self...when taking apart your fence...all your neighbors can see your back yard. I need to do some yard work back there. I mean, seriously. Did I mention how much Sheryl worked before I even got home?? She is amazing.

I had to take a break at 2pm to take the girls to a matinee of "High School Musical" at Brentwood High School. BHS always does great shows. "High School Musical" was AWESOME! The girls loved it!

The students did a great job with their roles and the singing was really great! The girl lead definitely has a music career ahead of her.

There were several Otter Creek kids in the production. Maddie and Ella were especially excited to see them perform.

Julie Crothers is the daughter of one of our children's ministers, Janet Crothers. She played a cheerleader/dancer and did a great job!

Matthew Dodson was in the ensemble and did a great job too! I cannot believe how big these kids are now. I am feeling OLD, but it was really fun!
This morning we spent time in Romans 9-11. It was a great day. I met a guy before church who is in town rehearsing with a cruise ship cast. We ended up having a great discussion. Ironically, he's working for my friend, Gary Musick. It truly is a small world.
Tonight was Celebration with the college "Sanctuary" band. It was awesome! More on that tomorrow. I'm too sore to type anymore.

I had such an encouraging breakfast with David Hampton from Christ Community Church. David has been the worship minister there for a long time. We’ve done a couple of his songs with ZOE. He’s also a part of my Monday night experience each week. This morning was a huge blessing. I’m grateful for that relationship and mentoring.

We’re working through Romans on Sundays at Otter Creek. Tim leaves for Greece next week so John York will be preaching for three weeks in his place. I’ve known john for a very long time. We met yesterday to work through some of the next 3-4 weeks. I secretly wish I could be in Greece with Tim hearing all the cool stories and seeing those amazing places that I’ve only imagined.

It was fun visiting with John. He travels with ZOE and we’ve gotten to see a lot of each other over the last several years. I am looking forward to teaming with him this month. Besides being an awesome preacher, he’s been a great friend.

Romans 9-11. Read it lately in a chunk? It belongs in the greater context of the entire message of Romans, but even then it’s troubling. I confess, it’s a section that has caused a lot of prayer and searching for me over the years.

Anyone want to weigh in on Romans 9-11?

PS: American Idol...SO glad Antonella Barba is moving on. Can’t believe that Sundance got kicked off and Sanjaya didn’t. My favorites right now are Blake Lewis, Melinda Doolittle, LaKisha Jones, and Gina Glocksen.

One thing Leonard Sweet talked about last weekend that has stuck with me has to do with the "Perfect Storm". He compared that concept to where we are in today’s post-modern (or whatever term you want to use) culture. He asked the question, "Where is the most dangerous place to be in a storm?" The answer is, hugging the dock. As we saw in Katrina, those ships were destroyed, and may I point out, also created devastation of their own.

No, ironically, the safest place to be in a storm is actually IN the storm--riding it out. Our church families have GOT to quit hugging shore. We need to be willing to risk, willing to do something radical for Jesus. I see lots of people at Otter Creek taking risks for Jesus and it fuels me! I need more of that in my own life.

Another thing Sweet suggested is that we do way too much whining. He compared our trials (mainly from a church perspective) to the weather. Who can change the weather? It is what it is! He suggested that instead of complaining to God...we should dive in, ride the waves, hands in the air and when arriving on land exclaim, "Wow, God! What a ride!" I appreciated the sentiment. It has really stuck with me.

I like the idea of risk taking. It’s been something that has always plagued me personally and hasn't always worked out so well. Maybe it’s because I’m designed to do that for the Kingdom of God but have been conditioned over time to be more afraid of that than I should.

Take a risk today. Who’s with me?

Last night we finally got to celebrate Mom's birthday! We took her to the new Hibatchi Grill near our house and we had awesome sushi and chicken.

Afterwards we went home for Sheryl's homemade birthday cake (YUM!) and presents!

Today has been a full day. I wish I had time to blog about it all. One thing I LOVE about ministry is walking with people through various phases of life. It's exhausting, but so, SO worth it. When we walk together, we're all changed!
Tonight we have Easter rehearsal again. 4.5 weeks and counting til Easter Sunday! YAY! Hopefully everyone has listened to their CDs and looked over their music (hint, hint). Have a great Wednesday night, blog land.

Ahhhhh, the joys of being back home!! Yesterday was so beautiful in Nashville! I am so thankful for my "family day" especially after being gone for 4 days and not getting to love on my kids.

We allow our girls to collect check marks for chores (and eventually Sam will). When they get enough checks we take them to the dollar tree and let them pick out anything they want (usually no more than $2). I know, we're cheap...but they don't care or know the difference.

Yesterday Ella picked out a bug collector kit! It's so cute! It has a strap so she can wear it around her neck, tongs, and a bug net to help her catch them--see below

We spent almost the entire day outside looking for bugs. I kept thinking to myself, these are sweet days. I'll be remembering this for a long time...keep getting dirty, stay with it as long as she wants to. Finally, she got Sam into the action after he woke up from napping. He's turning into such a little boy (leaving that baby stage).

Ella stayed with the bug collecting even into the late afternoon. She collected MANY worms and as she picked them up with her tongs she would say, "Here you go, Mister Worm, you're going to LOVE your new family!"

Meanwhile, I tried to get Maddie to come hunt for worms and she wouldn't hear of it. She actually said, "I can't, Daddy. I'm too busy building the set." When I asked her what it was she meant she replied, "I'm doing a show in a little while. You can come if you want." The picture below is of her set. Complete with tape (in case something went wrong). I am pretty sure that I am the biggest picture taking dork ever.

She included something for everyone...a little hula-hooping, some jump rope action, reading aloud from her Children's Bible, singing, and a magic trick (seen below)
It was such a fun day of family. Sheryl and I are so blessed. We had so much fun being with our ZOE family and then got to come home and enjoy our own family. Our kids are growing and changing so quickly. I am trying to relish every moment...and even at that, it's lightening fast. This morning I got to sit in the back seat with Ella as they all took me to work. (my car...bless. That's all I can say about that.) She held my hand most of the way.
I do not deserve all the gifts God has showered on me...and I am fully aware. That's why I want to continue to glorify what He's doing. I consider these 4 other people in my house gifts of His mercy. I can never repay Him, but I can sure enjoy the gifts!

We are back in Nashville tonight feeling so blessed by what we just experienced. The weekend could not have gone better. The folks at Monterey completely knocked it out of the park. I think it's safe to say that we were all overwhelmed with their level of preparation, hospitality, and heart. It was an amazing weekend from beginning to end. AND...I went into the weekend completely locked up in my back. One of my old Gamma Sig buddies, Jon Blackwell, showed up from Amarillo. He's a Chiropractor!! Thank you, Jon!!!!
Here's a summary of the weekend in pictures...

A host of friendly faces waited for all the conference registrants to come through the doors

Monterey's new building was so warm and inviting...the perfect place for the conference!

Friday night kicked off with a full house and hearts ready to worship!

Rich Smith and I taught the Worship Minister's track on Saturday. (Stephen's group joined us later)

Jeff Walling performed his AMAZING one man show of Matthew. Hilarious and touching!

Jeff Walling, Sheryl and me at dinner. The wonderful cooks at Monterey kept us fed in the Green Room with delicious food all weekend. They were absolutely wonderful people.

My friend Janice and I grew up together. Our moms were childhood friends and in each others' weddings. Our families used to go to New Braunfels every summer together. It was really fun catching up with Janice and her husband, Kelly.

Don Heyen and Brent McCall were good friends of mine at ACU. Brent was my roommate for 2 years and we were all in Gamma Sigs together. I loved catching up with them!

The ZOE guys enjoy some TACO BUENO!!! Ahhhhhh, West Texas!! I have days of craving Bueno...a little Bueno Chilada platter and a strawberry Fanta!

ZOE--Peter, Brian, Lea, me, Amy, Melissa, Sheryl, David, Philip (Doyle Corder joined us after Pete had to take off early. Awesome job, Doyle!)

The real ZOE girls! Amy, Lea, Melissa and Sheryl (a.k.a. Ahhhmeee, Shmee, Melizzard, and Scaryl)

This precious woman came from Florida to the conference. Before she could even attend, she broke her hip. We got to go to the hospital Saturday night after the last session and sing over her. She said it blessed her, but the truth is, it really blessed us more to be with her.

Eric and Vicki pack up all the ZOE product getting ready to leave.

Brian and I are on the bus headed for the airport. It was a great weekend and we are leaving all feeling renewed ourselves.
Much thanks to everyone in Lubbock and at the Monterey Church. Warren, Barry, Denise, Eric, and so many others gave of their time and hearts to make this one of our favorite ZOE conferences ever! Thank you!!

When is the last time you barfed on an airplane? Me? Well let's see...approximately 45 minutes ago. Nice.

It's been a day of travel mishaps. Our flight left late and so I missed my connection in Dallas. The flights were all overbooked and had lots of stand-by passengers already. I begged with the very nice AA gate agent. I used my best "feel sorry for me" eyes and told her where I was going and why. She clicked around on her computer (that always cracks me up...do gate agents have to take a speed typing course??) and found someone who was going to miss her connection. She bumped me up with a confirmed seat. Hallelujah! I didn't even have to threaten to barf on anyone!

Next stop...LUBBOCK!

PS: After writing this, things got weirder. For one, I left my laptop bag sitting on the jet bridge and had to run off the plane to rescue it just as security was about to do a bomb check. Perfect. THEN, we were all sitting on the plane waiting and waiting until the flight attendant came on and said, "We're sorry for the delay, Ladies and Gentlemen, but we have not been able to locate the pilot." Um...excuse me? Yeah--so they waited some more and after several more updates stating that he was still MIA, he finally showed up. I mean, what a bizarre day! The good news is, I'm writing this from my hotel room in LUBBOCK!! Yea!

I am taking a short mental break from Otter, ZOE, Easter, etc to blog for a minute. I am stressed today. Please pray for me. Our CD burner broke so I am burning 45 CDs one at a time for Easter rehearsal tonight. UGH.

We are doing a combo of a couple of published works. Both are by Travis Cottrell whom I LOVE! One is called "Redemption" and the other is called "Alive Forever". We'll have a worship choir of around 40-50 and we'll sing with the praise band led by Jason Patrick. I am excited about it! Here's our song list...

1. All The Earth Will Sing Your Praises
2. Hallelujah (Your Love Makes Me Sing)
3. You Are God Alone
4. Great God Medley--How Great Thou Art and How Great is Our God (first with piano only)
5. You Humble Me
6. O Love That Will Not Let Me Go (just voices)
7. The Power of the Cross (piano and guitar...ZOE arrangement)
8. We Fall Down/Holy Holy Holy (ZOE arrangement)
9. All the Heavens (just voices...ZOE arrangement)
10. You Are Holy (ZOE arrangement with band)
11. Alive Forever Amen

Have I mentioned that the ZOE conference in Lubbock is up to almost 650?? THAT'S AWESOME!!!! For the leadership conference this Friday I am taking the second session and we're going to work through some exercises in centering our hearts. We'll do some journaling things, we're going to watch the "Rain" DVD by Rob Bell, and I am going to take them through several parts of a book called Body Prayer by Doug Pagitt (who some of you have heard of through the Emergent Church stuff) and Kathryn Prill. It's a wonderful book that helps you in your meditation and prayer time.

Thanks for all the comments on the "Closer" theme. I really appreciate your hearts. It's cool to read your thoughts and ideas.

And, finally, American Idol!!! Last night the boys did so much better. I am still a huge fan of Blake Lewis. I think he's unique and I like his voice and style. It's fresh and current. Can't wait to watch the girls! Hopefully, Sheryl will get to tape it again.

Thank you to all who helped my poor brother-in-law, Fajita, see the error of his ways. As you can tell, his heart is still hardened to the good news of plain M&M's. We'll continue to pray for your eyes to be opened to the truth, Chris. (Minions...I laughed out loud at that word on your comment, freaky boy.)

I had some good heart sharing time with the Samson guys last night. I continue to be grateful for that group.

I feel and extra sense of anticipation about traveling with ZOE this week. I can't put my finger on it. I just feel like God is preparing us for something. Would you mind praying about this coming weekend and please also pray for me. I don't want to do anything in my own strength this weekend. I feel like I need some real centering this week and in a busy week that will be a challenge to find. I could also use your prayers for vocal health. This coughy-crud has worn me out!

Can I ask you something? When you hear the word "Closer" what do you think of? The ZOE conferences this year are called "Closer". I am planning some centering time for the worship ministers on Friday. I'd be curious to know your thoughts about even that word and what comes to mind when you think about drawing closer to God.

Two pictures really say it all today...

Jennifer Hudson...deserving, and simply amazing. The live number from Dreamgirls last night brought down the house and made me want to do a back flip. WOW! UNBELIEVABLE!

and I quote...from M&M's product website... "An American original--the first ever M&M'S® Chocolate Candies."

Sunday, February 25, 2007

Hoping Jennifer Hudson wins a statue tonight!! I can't wait to watch the awards!

Lubbock looms...much to be done! I am excited about seeing a bunch of our friends there. Please be praying for all those who are traveling with us to sing, lead, or teach AND all those planning to attend.

Now...to settle something with my brother-in-law...let me ask you a question. If someone were to say to you, "Would you mind going to get me some M&Ms?" Which kind would you return with? Keep in mind...all that was asked for was M&Ms. Please vote...what would you return with if someone asked you for M&Ms...a dark brown bag of candy or a yellow bag of candy?

Our big news yesterday...Ella's glasses came in! She is very proud of them. (And we are working to convince her to STAY proud of them...) She came to Otter and showed everyone in the office. I have to say that I was in complete amazement at how corrective they are. Poor ol' girl. She said, "Yeah, daddy! I can see things!" Bless.

Our friend, Amanda, called us Wednesday and invited us to a CMT taping of Crossroads at the Ryman with Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson. Well, Caroline Martin had asked me Sunday if she could give Sheryl and me a night out this week. It was so sweet..thank you, Caroline! So, we said an enthusiastic "YES!!"

We met at Amanda's house to eat and ride together. Geof's (Amanda's husband) birthday was this week and he is into bicycle racing. He got a lovely, very aerodynamic helmet for his birthday. We were rolling at Sheryl acting out the Citibank commercial...

Sheryl sports Geof's new helmet. ("Need rewards faster?")

We made it to the Ryman and found our seats--great floor seats! All the TV techies were running around and the room was charged!

Sheryl and me at the Ryman

L-R Amanda, Sheryl, me and Lea at the Ryman

We had SUCH a blast! Reba and Kelly were AWESOME!! Kelly Clarkson's voice just floored me. They sang each other's hit songs and had to re-sing a few for taping. The audience didn't mind at all. It was so much fun--we all danced and screamed and acted like we were 20 again.

They sang Kelly's hit, "Because of You" and Reba had to stop at the end and compose herself. She was obviously moved. They also completely rocked out singing "Since U Been Gone". I wondered if they'd sing Reba's song, "Fancy". (I confess, I do NOT like that song.) They did this incredible rock version of it. It was so fun. They ended the night with it.

Thanks to Amanda for the tickets! We laughed, we cried, it truly WAS better than CATS. (not that it takes much...) :)

Happy Birthday to my dear mother today! I am so thankful for her and the impact she has had on me, on my family, and our friends, and on the world. She has brought Children's Literature alive for so many kids and adults through the years. She survived the death of my dad. She moved from her home town area after 60+ years to a new, larger city in a new state. She's a wonderful writer. She models worship and contemplative living so well. She is a woman to be honored...and my kids are getting to have relationship with her. What a treasure! Happy Birthday, Mom!

Our rehearsal went well last night. It's hard to believe that Easter is right around the corner. It was fun to have some new folks at rehearsal too!

American Idol...well, finally! The singers have arrived. Oh my goodness. Thanks to Sheryl for taping it for me.

Tonight, thanks to our friend Amanda who works for CMT, we are getting to go to the live taping of "Crossroads". It's a show where CMT pairs two artists...usually a pop artist and a country artist. Tonight's taping is at the Ryman and should be awesome! The artists are Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson. Wooo-hooo!!! Thanks, Amanda!

PS: Really, REALLY excited about Lubbock! Registration is over 500 so far. Can't wait to be in TEXAS next week!!

What comes to mind when you hear the word, "shame"? Take a second and think about it.

Have you felt it? Have you walked it? Does it trouble or confuse you? There have been times in my life when I have put on shame like a garment...some old jeans that have holes in them that you know you should dispose of but they're too familiar. There have been days when I have looked for refuge and not found it. There have been times when I have listened to the voice of the enemy, even recognizing his accusing tone, and believed him. Can you relate?

There is a difference between shame and guilt. Guilt comes from an action...it says that a particular action was bad. Shame comes from the heart...it says YOU are bad. God doesn't use shame to motivate us. The Spirit brings conviction of actions that are apart from His will. The Spirit wants that heart---the heart that belongs to the Father. Shame can send us to the pit believing that we can never overcome, never amount to much, never be pleasing to the Father. Jesus took that shame and made a spectacle of it...those rulers and authorities of darkness. He nailed shame to the cross and triumphed over it by rising from the dead. Praise Him!

Today is Ash Wednesday. It's a time for contemplation and introspection. There are areas in our lives where we need to repent. We are guilty. We've done things that are against God. But, he takes that guilt upon Himself if we'll let Him. And shame...well, shame is a tool of the enemy. I need to remember that as I accept the mercy that He has given me through the blood of Jesus.

If you have a chance...try and find an Ash Wednesday service. I'll bet it would be a blessing...different, but might allow for a meaningful visual.

Today I feel old. Time really does fly! 15 years ago this year I was a senior at ACU. It was Sing Song time and I directed Gamma Sigs. We won that year and it was such a fun experience! FIFTEEN YEARS! ugh.

For those of you unfamiliar with Sing Song or versions similar like "Sing" at Baylor, it is truly something that can only be experienced. This was the 51st year of Sing Song at ACU. All the fraternities and sororities compete for the best in originality/best costumes/best vocals and best overall. It's highly charged and the entire production includes something like 1000 students. It's insane. There are also 6 students who are "Hosts and Hostesses". They sing between each club act backed by the ACU jazz band. As a student I was a host in '91 (along with 2 of my fellow bloggers...Stephen Bailey and Val Durrington) and then directed Gamma Sigs my senior year in '92. Then I got to go back later after I worked for Norwegian Cruise Line and was vocal director. Those were fun, FUN days!

An ACU student sent me a YouTube clip of Gamma Sigs award winning show from this year. It was fun to watch...take a minute to watch and see what this crazy show is all about! And...keep in mind, each fraternity and sorority competes with similar acts. It's truly an amazing show. (Thanks to Jim Kizer for this link!)

Last night we had our annual baby blessing at Otter Creek. I heard someone say, "WOW, this is one FERTILE church!" Well, the truth is, it's a growing place where lots of young families are finding a home and friends to assist them on the Journey. We also have friends who have struggled to have babies. Some of them were on stage last night after months of agony and desperate hope that they could get pregnant and then stay pregnant. Some are still in that battle.

It was a sweet, sweet night. It sounded like a circus of crying children! Here are some pictures from the event. There are a few bloggers you'll recognize here. Congratulations to all!

Scott, Amy, Luke, and Caroline Westerman. Amy has sung with ZOE since the beginning. Scott and Amy came to Otter Creek a little over a year ago and it's so fun to have them a part of our church family!

Shelly, Adrian, and Bennett Church. Shelly is Ryan Williamson's sister and has been like family to me for many, MANY years! Adrian and Shelly moved here in 2005 and we are so thankful!

L-R Scott and Amy Westerman and family, Sheryl and Phil Wilson and family

L-R Kristen (Cottier) Brown and family, Shelly and Adrian Church

I couldn't get everyone in...but here's most of them!

We had a really fun day yesterday. We heard that the YMCA in Bellevue had an amazing indoor pool so we picked up Lauren and made the trek all the way out there to check it out. Sure enough, they were right! It's basically like the outdoor pool at Maryland Farms but inside...and better! It's a graduated...so perfect for the little ones. There are fountains, a fun whale slide for the kids, big kid/adult slides, and a cool palm tree that has coconuts that collect water until they're full and then dumps the water over the heads of those underneath the tree. There are awesome murals on the wall and great big windows to see outside.

While we were there it was snowing like crazy outside--huge, beautiful snowflakes. (Unfortunately, it didn't accumulate because the ground wasn't cold enough.) We were inside in our swimsuits acting as if we were in the middle of July...while watching the snow fall outside! SO fun! We even got to see Phil Wilson and his daughter, Kinsey. The kids all had such a blast.

This morning was "Remembrance Sunday" where we show pictures of those at Otter Creek who have died and read their names aloud. It's been a tradition at OC for many years. I was struck this morning by Shanon Dickerson's picture. It will be 5 years this year since we lost him. Shanon was in his late 20s and died of cancer. He was full of life, full of humor, full of love for Jesus and those around him. I miss him.

In the news...
I am celebrating today...4 straight days of spin (normally I only go Tues/Th) and I am living to tell about it. I even swam last night with my kids. The holidays got me so off my routine, I needed a boot camp of sorts to get me in gear. The YMCA offers a boot camp, but it's $200 a session. Puh-lease. I can torture myself for free.

American Idol...loving that we're finally past the horribly embarrassing auditions and into the fun stuff. I have some favorites, do you?

I haven't mentioned this yet, but our Ella is getting glasses. Bless her...she's far sighted. She is absolutely THRILLED to be getting glasses!

I've been writing down some children's stories that have come out of bed time with the kids. In my next life I want to write children's books. (and not be like the guy on "Elf"..."Does someone need a hug?" HA!)

A local car rental place called JOY autorental sent me a hand-written note with a Starbucks gift card for $5 just to let me know they rent VW Beetle Convertibles. While extremely random, I was really excited to get the $5 card. Now I can buy a pack of Sweet and Low at Starbucks (which we affectionately call "Four Bucks"). I thought it was a really nice gesture. So, if any of you Music City folks need to rent a car, rent from Bob Porter at JOY autorental.

And finally, the verdict came down in the Smith murder case. The Smith's are members of the Remnant Church (Gwen Shamblin). Not guilty of 1st degree murder, but guilty of involuntary manslaughter and a couple of other things associated with child abuse. How someone could stuff their child in a box after beating and starving him, I'll never understand. So, SO sad.

It's supposed to snow here tonight and tomorrow. I'm praying for HEAPS! I know those of you reading in the north east would say, "Be careful what you wish for..." but I really, really, REALLY want it to snow. Anyone up for sledding?

This morning as I work on some things for this weekend and for the upcoming ZOE conference, I am listening to a cassette tape. Yes, friends, a cassette tape. Cassettes are soon to be the 8 track tapes of my childhood (extinct). It's Passion Live from probably around 1997 or so. Songs like "We Fall Down", "You Are My King", "You Alone", "In the Secret" (before Sonic Flood!) with the crowd singing loudly, "I WANT TO KNOW YOU..."etc. I can remember when I first heard some of those songs. I was so moved. Christy Nockels' voice is so pure, so haunting. It was what first introduced me to many of those songs.

I was taken back to simpler days sitting in an office in a 50 year old building (the old Otter Creek). I remember playing through the chord charts thinking that we should really be singing these great songs. I was in the beginning of a ministry at Otter Creek. Most people were either really excited about the future or really afraid. Few were ambivalent. ZOE was just beginning. We were meeting each Saturday morning to pray about what the Lord would have us do. We were considering holding a conference on worship in Nashville that fall.

Ten years later I sit in an office in a much larger building planning worship for a growing church, and working on one of our regional conferences on worship coming in 2 weeks in TX. We've been talking through plans for our 11th Nashville Worship Conference coming next fall. Looking back over 10+ years of ZOE, we've been talking about how things have changed and in some ways we'll be going back to our roots next fall. I was just struck this morning at the goodness of God over the last decade.

The song playing right now is "Show Your Power". It simply says, "Show Your power, O Lord our God! " We prayed that prayer then and we've really seen His power. I'm grateful for those songs that helped shape me. I'm grateful for songs that have come along since. Songs like "Blessed Be Your Name" and "Still" that have given voice to emotions and struggles along the journey.

Some days I wake up and fight doubts and cynicism. Some days I feel overcome by the faithfulness of God that surrounds me. I was convicted today that a life of faith is full of seasons. They are woven together to make a beautiful tapestry that displays the fullness of God's character in our lives...roads marked with suffering AND streams of abundance.

I'll leave you with these words we sang on the ZOE project called "Ancient Future" back in 2004.

Morning by morning I wake up to find
The power and comfort of God's hand in mine.
Season by season I watch Him amazed
In awe of the mystery of His perfect ways.
All I have need of His hand will provide
He's always been faithful to me.

I can't remember a joy or a pain
He did not recycle to bring me gain.
I can't remember one single regret
In serving God only and trusting His hand.
All I have need of His hand will provide
He's always been faithful to me.

This is my anthem, this is my song,
The theme of the stories I've heard for so long
God has been faithful, He will be again.
His loving compassion, it knows NO END!
All I have need of His hand will provide
He's always been faithful to me.

May your heart be full of love today! (I figured simple heart pictures are over used. Here's something a little more graphic!) HA!

There is true community in sharing the Supper. Alan French shared something with me last fall at the ZOE conference--a way to take the Supper that has really blessed me. Each Sunday as the cup is passed he takes a cup from the very middle of the tray. (you know how most trays have circles...it's that inner circle.) He and his friends separated by miles do this each week to remind themselves that this Walk is about community and they share community with each other.

I have been doing this since last fall. Each Sunday as I remember Christ and what He did for me, I also have a fuller picture of some of my brothers like Josh Ross, Stephen Bailey, Craig Fisher, Chris Doggett, Kyle Dickson and others taking the bread and cup and remembering Christ. There is power in community. We've walked hard roads together. We've laughed and cried. And each Sunday we stop and remember Jesus and how he gave everything for us. It's been a real blessing to me. It's one more way of remembering that this Journey is not just about the vertical.

I love that Jesus had the disciples take time to prepare a supper table, a gathering place. He could have given them instructions to go sit in a dark room alone. But He didn't. It was a community supper. There was interaction, there was admonition, there was friendship. I'm so glad that is a part of the example He gave us.

Our girls are so excited about being flower girls at Kiki's wedding this summer. They can hardly wait! I took some pictures of them last night. Maddie was the little poser--as you can see. Ella would have none of it. She flatly refused to have her picture made alone. HA! Here are my little beauties...

Last night for Life Group we met at the Sandella's new house to unpack boxes. Their new house is awesome and perfect for them.

After unpacking we converged back at our house to watch the Grammys. So many thoughts. I was remembering 1998 when I went and got to attend the after party. It was such a blast. SO many stories...and some definite BST moments (aka: finding myself in weirder than weird circumstances). I was there the year that Celine Dion sang the theme song from Titanic and hit her chest so hard that she about gave herself heart failure. It was also just after Bob Carlisle was nominated for "Butterfly Kisses". My friend I went with was his agent (as well as Third Day and Faith Hill and Tim McGraw). I wasn't listening when Jeff introduced me to Bob's wife (Mrs. Butterfly Kisses") and she and I chit-chatted for several minutes before I ridiculously said... "You got a last name, 'Bob's Wife'?" (awkward pause...) "Um...Carlisle." (walk away...just walk away.)

It was an amazing after-party. I even got a gift bag! I still have some of the stuff saved including a cool Coke bottle printed for the Grammys that year. I'll never forget being there and seeing everyone all decked out.

Last night I enjoyed Carrie Underwood...awesome! I thought John Legend was as incredible as always. Beyonce' smoked on her song from Dreamgirls. And Natalie Maines...well, what can I say? Natalie Maines cannot seem to keep her mouth shut. She could have accepted the award with class...but why should that be different? I thought it was in poor taste.

I got to go check out the new cast for Celebrity Cruise Line's ship The Summit. They have several shows to learn in just a few weeks. After just one week of rehearsal they were fantastic! Check out Gary Musick's website for more info... click here . It took me back. Mercy--that's a stressful time--trying to get the show up and ready.

Yesterday Otter Creek celebrated ONE YEAR in our new building. We've had around 250 people join OC in the last year and we've had over 200 guests each Sunday for a year. There are so many great things about this new space. I'm grateful that we didn't have to build. This was a much more economical and affordable option. Thank you, God, for opening the door!

Lauren's puppy, Scout, is winning friends at our house. Here are a couple of pictures we took last night.

Bear and Scout cozied up on Bear's bed together.

I am back at work today. Apparently, I don't look great because I have gotten a couple of, "You look AWFUL!!" remarks. Oh well.

Gwen Shamblin and the Remnant Fellowship are in a heap of trouble. Her wacky theology is being revealed in magazines, on TV news and in conversations all over the country. There are a lot of people we deeply love who have become a part of Remnant (which means they are encouraged to cut ties with us. Gwen and David used to be at Otter Creek and were good friends of ours. Long story.) As removed from us as they may be and though we may strongly disagree with Gwen on most of her teachings and dealings these last 7 years or so, we must still pray for them. Isn't that pretty much a direct command of Christ? I confess to you, it's difficult.

Changing the subject...I got this email today from a friend. It made sent me into a coughing frenzy after laughing really, really hard. Apparently, one of his co-workers posted something on Craigslist about needing a roommate. She got this as a response to her ad. There are so many funny things in here, it's impossible to know where to begin. And...neither of them are blog readers. But, just in case the writer is reading, the "Greys" visited me too...by the name of Stephen Bailey! enjoy...

Hi, It's great to hear from you! I really am a good
person and a great roommate. You girls sound great, too.
Let me tell you a little bit about myself: I am 31, I am a hard worker, a Baptist, I have no pets, but I do love cats, I don't smoke, I don't drink, (although I don't mind if others drink) I'd prefer no smoking though. I love social situations, but at
times, I definitely appreciate time to myself. I'd love to meet with you in
person. I need to tell you one thing first, though. The reason I even bring it
up, is that even though I don't think that it's a big deal, some of my roommates
in the past did, and I feel like I should get this out of the way, now.

In the last couple of apartments that I've lived in, I've been visited
(in my room) a few times late at night. Now, before you freak out, they have
NEVER bothered any of my roommates. They have never caused me any harm, and
I have seen an expert several times about them. From my descriptions, he's told
me that they are called "Greys", one of two of the most common known of visitors
from other planets. Yes, we think that they may be aliens. Sounds unbelievable
and scary at first, but it's really not, once you get used to the idea. It's
really not a big deal. They won't bother you at all, and who knows, if I move,
they may not even follow me. I'll be honest, that would be nice!

I really am normal. It's just that one thing that people think is weird. Please
don't hold it against me. Maybe we could meet on the Pedestrian Bridge ,
Downtown. I needed to go there this week, anyway!

If you and your roommate could meet me there, you should both wear all purple, so that I know who you are. Also, you are welcome to bring one suitcase each with you.
Definitely bring a water bottle. Oh, and don't wear any perfume. They will know!

I can't wait to meet you! Let me know when you can make it, See ya
there!

Still sick. There's not enough mucus thinner in the world to take care of me. BLAGHHH...

Our friend Lauren has a new (ish) puppy named "Scout". He is awesome and has become a part of the family. Bear and Scout are big buds. As I have laid here lethargically, I've been watching Scout flip and run and nip and play. Watching him makes me tired! But he's SO CUTE!
Here's a pic of Sam and Scout...

Maddie loves taking pictures. I'm not sure which she enjoys more...snapping them, or directing where everyone should sit or stand and how they should look. Wonder where she gets that? Loved this picture. Sam is growing so fast!

Last night a group of us said goodbye to Eric, Sallie and Eli Miller. Sallie has been singing with us for a couple of years now. Eric has been a constant friend to me. He has blessed my life in many ways and we've been active in "Samson" together. They are moving to Tulsa. If anyone out there in Tulsa is reading...please get the welcome wagons ready. Their move is our GREAT loss and your gain. We pray many blessings on their new life in Tulsa.
I am in bed today with a nasty cold. It hurts to move. The only time I moved quickly was to change the channel when Pat Robertson came on. ;)

Sometimes "sweet nothings" can be sweet everythings.

Last night as I was laying in bed with Ella saying goodnight, she hugged me really hard and said with her little growly voice in my ear, "I will always love you...even when I'm grown up and get married...even when I'm a mommy and have children...I will always love you!"

I think that has to be in the top three things any dad would want to hear. I am blessed.

PS: ZOE heads to TX in a few weeks. We'll be in Lubbock the first weekend in March at the Monterey Church. Leonard Sweet will be joining us. His new book, The Gospel According to Starbucks just came out. Thanks to Stuart McGuiggan for the book and always keeping me updated on releases! I'm so excited you'll be at the conference, Stu! See you there!

My long time buddy, Lea Brown, and me at the Vickers' Super Bowl party

Enjoying the Super Bowl with Lea Brown, Brian Randolph, Amanda Vickers *ding!*
Tonight we watched Super Bowl XLI at Geof and Amanda Vickers' house. It was so much fun. What a great game! Peyton Manning...the MAN! I'm so glad the Colts won! Former University of Tennessee quarterback, Manning has gotten what he's dreamed of professionally.
Sheryl and I decided to get creative tonight since we didn't have a sitter. I went for the first half of the game and we traded at half-time! I got the better end of the deal since the kids were all in bed by the time I got home. THANKS, SHERYL!

Saturday mornings were always special to me as a kid. My dad usually made breakfast...2 fried eggs (sunny side up), bacon, and toast with butter. I loved Saturday morning cartoons. I remember waking up before regular TV programming came on and sitting in front of the white "snowy" screen just waiting. Back then, there was no such thing as the Disney channel or Cartoon Network. Saturday mornings were IT! Anyone remember "Captain Caaaaaaaaave Maaaaaaaan"? I also loved the Smurfs.

As an adult, there are new traditions. I love making nachos for lunch. Nothing fancy, just chips, melted cheddar cheese, cherry tomatoes, and sweet banana peppers (when in season). Today was a nachos kind of day!

Here are some pictures of the snow this week. There are still traces but the bulk of it has long since melted.

SNOWWWWWWWWW!!!! YEA! Why, I ask you...WHY does it snow more in TEXAS than here??? It's so very sad. I loved waking up this morning and seeing the snow draped all over trees like whipping cream. I loved the crunchy feeling under my shoes as we ran outside to play. I loved having to shovel off 2 inches of snow from my car windshield. YEA!

I've been having snow skiing withdrawals. It will soon be 2 years since I've been. I had my nose pressed against the airplane window as we flew over Colorado last weekend. I could see the trails. I was wishing for a parachute. Wait...scratch that. I'm scared of heights.

There is something so beautiful about snow. Today was the perfect kind too. No ice to speak of and the roads were mostly clear. I know kids everywhere were enjoying building snowmen and playing. I'm hoping it's not the last we'll see of it before Winter leaves us. I figure...if it's gonna be cold then at least make it INTERESTING! :)

Have a great weekend, blog family!
