Yesterday was just an amazing day all the way around. The message from Romans 3 made me want to jump up and down. It impacted me deeply. What a wonderful morning! There were several amazing God events that morning.
And then...at the end of service, I pulled a Brandon. We had mass exodus of parents leaving to get kids during the Elder's blessing. We've talked about that in staff meeting for weeks and no one seemed to ever remember to say something. So, I felt compelled to go on and make the announcement myself pleading for parents to wait until worship service and children's worship were actually over before leaving in droves (literally like over 100 people got up at the same time to leave and it was really distracting). Of course...what I didn't know...up behind me larger than life was a giant sign saying, "Parent's please go get your kids now." (A sign we save for when the service goes long--which it wasn't.) Thanks Turff! I'm going to forward all my calls to YOU! :) But that, as we say in our house, is pulling a Brandon. What a dork. Chastising people for being distracting while there's a huge movie screen basically announcing the fact that we already know...BST's a doofus! HA! Well, maybe at least folks will remember it next week.
Then...Trunk of Treat!! All the children of Otter Creek and the Wayne Reed Center came and went around to over 100 cars decorated with all kinds of fun. Of course, Sheryl has been whipping up costumes in her Mary Poppins way. I'm serious...how DOES she do it? We were Fairy tale characters...Little Bo Peep and her sheep, Little Red Riding Hood, the Wolf and the Granny! It was a BLAST!!! Here are some pics for ya...

Keith and Jamie Thompson always come as something super cool. They went from Captain Hook, and Peter Pan last year to Super Man and Bat Man this year.

Every year when you post your Halloween pictures I am amazed at Sheryl's work. You all look amazing.

And BST, forward the calls to me, not Turf. As Tech director, that was my fault and it should have been my call on putting the slide up, but I wasn't in the booth, because I was going to get Kinsey from Children's Church....
now we know the real source not only of the media shout but of the wrong doing itself. I expect you down front next Sunday. (of course I won't be there but still...)
That looks awesome. At least you didn't have the Sheriff's coming out of the woods at your church event cursing and having pistols ready to shoot, because we were having spooky trails in the woods.

A humble apology from "Turf":
Brandon, I am so sorry. Words can not express the anguish I felt when you got up there and said that about picking up the kids knowing that I had just flashed the slide up there and you didn't see it! It went up as the next slide in the series, and since the computer it's on probably has a pentium 2 processor, by the time I could get it off when I realized it went up during the shepherds close I knew it was too late. I'm just not as good at moving around in MS. Man, I'm an idiot!
I was going to tell you to forward all calls to me anyway, and I'll make a public apology next Sunday. : )
Can't we just go back to song books?
My wife and I were just talking about the issue of "early dismissal" yesterday:
Most Sundays at our church, we sing a "closing song" after the sermon and announcements. This song is usually a planned part of the worship assembly, just like the other songs we sing and the other elements of our Sunday morning worship. Most of the time, it's a song that relates to the theme of the day and/or it is a song that puts a ribbon on the assembly and sends people out of the building with a song on their lips (so to speak). However, one of our pastors has asked that we dismiss parents with young children during this song so that they can get their kids from the nursery and children's worship a little early. So, I'm wondering -
When does "the worship assembly" officially "end" at your churches?
Well, as BST said yesterday, it ends when HE says it ends...

My girls are Little Bo Peep and a sheep this year, too. However, Landry will tell you that she is "Mary" and she has a "little lamb".
A few days ago someone asked her what she was going to be for Halloween and she said "Mary". Then, they got this puzzled look on their face, looked at me and said, "...as in Mother of God?" Ha!!

Not only was Phil not doing his job as tech director, but apparently he wasn't listening either. I never said that it's "over when I say it's over". What I said was it's over at 11:15. That sign is supposed to flash at 11:15. So in case you still need some help understanding, I can put it in writing. Or I can post it to the sites you surf during church.

Yes....the official end is 11:15 and ironically, the childrens' ministers were some of the main ones behind the announcement. They feel that the early picking up of kids is distracting to the teachers and other kids. Clearly it's a matter of communication from all.
Being the computer operator once a month at our church is scary. I am afraid to take my eyes off any part of the entire worship service...who has time to surf?
I have a hard enough time dismissing the kids to Childrens Church, I can never remember to fire the runner.
Ok, I don't surf while running the service. Really. There's no way, particularly when Tim has 63 slides for the sermon.
