My Dad...Still In Our Hearts!

This week marks 19 years since my dad died. I was at ACU as a college student at the time. It was incredibly difficult. There are still days 19 years later when the sadness is palpable. But, as anyone knows who has experienced loss, time helps in ways that nothing else really can. We miss him every day. He was such a fun dad and a great man.

A couple of weeks ago Sheryl was cleaning some things out and found a letter that my father wrote to me the day I left for college. It had been several years since I had read it. I sat and cried tears of joy as I read the words my dad wanted to communicate to me. I had almost forgotten the way he worded things...his style, his inflection, his openness...even seeing his handwriting. It was one of the best gifts I've gotten in a long time.

In honor of this anniversary, I wanted to share this with you...copied just as he wrote it. This will give you a glimpse into the man he was and the incredible heart he had. I am blessed! I have never published this letter. There's a part of me that wasn't sure if I should. But, Sheryl encouraged me to share it in honor of him. This is really meaningful to me and a treasure to my heart. I'm sharing it here to celebrate my dad and his legacy.

Dear Brandon,
You left today on the first leg of leaving home. You can't imagine the void I've felt all day and thought I had prepared myself for this moment--but now I find I'm overcome with a flood of memories. I'm exhausted from the constant flashbacks that have gone on in my head all day long. I'll make it through this adjustment time, but I ain't doing so well today. I'm surprised at my reaction, cause I've listened to many of my friends talk about their experiences with the empty nest syndrome and I've always been able to encourage them with the right things to say--and, now, today, the right words aren't there for me. For the first time I was able to understand the tears in my mother's eyes when I left home. It's a feeling you can't know until you experience it.

After you left this morning, we came home and tried to stay busy. I worked in the yard, but couldn't get in the mood to really work. I cut down the flowers under your window that had been damaged by hail--but kept thinking how much you liked the flowers and how you used to cut them and put them on the graves of our pets. Then I cut off the long rose stems and thought about how you liked for me to do that so they wouldn't scratch across your window at night.

I went around to the back yard then, and suddenly the little mound out toward the camper flashed a memory of your sand box--Do you know there is still sand under that mound?? I stood looking at it and then up in the mulberry tree where I could see a few boards left from the tree house we made. Remember sleeping up there one night?

I walked on back to the barn and inside I could see your go-cart and bicycle. In back of the barn there stands your old swing set, and Tiger's cart (my horse). I'm seeing all of this through misty eyes--I haven't been brave about this at all. Walking back to the house, the dogs barked and I thought again of all your pets and the names you gave them. Paisley, for a dog, has got to be the craziest name for a dog I have ever heard--and now, suddenly, it's beautiful.

So much for the yard. Right now I may never work in it again!!! I can hardly bear to look at the gazebo--I'll have to take it down soon and that will be a sad job.

I came in the house then and told Mom I'd help her change the bedroom furniture around. That turned out to be an all morning-plus-effort. After several trial layouts, we finally decided on one that'll be a little different. At least, the room got a good cleaning.

We stopped in time to go to Kristie Conder's wedding at Minter Lane. She married a Mike Jones. The wedding was really pretty. The singers were Harold and Jeannette Lipford, Ray and Kay McGlothlin, Burl and Jan McCoy. I kept thinking about you singing "Daddy's Hands" at Robyn's wedding.

I left the wedding and took Christie Rogers a book I had bought for her. She is doing well--looks better, but still can't talk. She is taking food by a straw. They all asked about you.

Next, I got a haircut and came home. It's still bad around here. The apricots don't taste quite as good now, and the house is awfully quiet. It'll take a while to get use to it--I'm already looking forward to you being at ACU and getting to go to the productions you'll be in. I'm very proud of you and I'm really glad you're getting to see the country this summer. It's a terrific opportunity. I wrote all of this down so that you'd know how your dad felt on the day you left. This has been a very long day and it's just 5:25pm now.

We're going with Dave and Ann to the Paramount tonight to see "Fountainhead". That'll help pass the evening away. I'll miss you in your spot at church in the morning, and at lunch when we go out to eat.

I'm not writing this to make you feel bad because this is a natural experience that all parents go through. It's just a chronicle of life and I wanted to share it with you.

God bless you!
Love,
Dad

PS: The show was pretty good. I'll miss going in and turning on your lamp in your bedroom tonight
You can probably see why this has become such a treasure to me over the years. I am pretty sure my dad knew how much it would mean to me...he knew the power of written and spoken blessing. He knew that words have power. He had the gift of expression and it affected many people around him. Here are a few pictures to celebrate my dad...

There is a school bearing his name in Abilene, TX. It's a wonderful place!

Dad, you are missed! Weekly, our kids refer to you and ask questions about their "Poppy". I wish you were here with us. Thank you for the years of memories you left with me and the heritage of love and faithfulness to our Father. When I think of the "great cloud of witnesses" as referred to in Hebrews...I think of you. I love you and miss you.

Ella's New Room

We've had house guests since June 1st. Now that Chris and Gail are in their new house, the kids have their rooms back and Ella got her "big girl" room. Sheryl did a great job on it. We are trying to keep things simple because we are putting our house on the market in a couple of weeks. so...in case anyone is interested, let us know.

Here's Ella's Fancy Nancy room...

Centennial Park on a Saturday

You know how sometimes you take for granted the things that are right in your own back yard? Well, living in Nashville can be like that. There's more live music here at any time of the day than almost anywhere in the world. There are more historical sites than you could ever possibly take in in a day, weekend, or even a month. So, this week we had made a plan to take the kids and hang out in Centennial Park today. What a great choice it was! There was an art festival and our friend Lauren Gingles met us there with her dog "Scout" who the kids really love.

One of the outstanding things about Centennial Park is the Parthanon. It's one of the treasures of Nashville. The kids really thought it was cool. They each took their scooters and we zoomed along the walking trails and ended up back at the ponds where we fed the geese with bread we brought from home. It was such a perfect day. The weather was gorgeous!

Here are some pics...

After we left the park we came home and worked more on the house. We cleaned the garage today...if you know us, you know what a chore that was. I got cracked up because a couple of families actually stopped by our house and got out of their cars thinking we were having a garage sale. Bless. We worked our tails off this afternoon. It looks great!

Tonight we had fondue. Cheese and chocolate. MMMMM!! The adults watched "Sweet Home Alabama"...one of our favorites. I don't think any of us will have a hard time sleeping tonight. I hope your weekend is going well. Thanks for stopping by and taking a minute to read!  Blessings to you.

Academy of Country Music Honors

Monday night we went to the Academy of Country Music Honors at the Ryman. It's always so cool being in that historic building. One of our producers, Bert Hensley, produced the red carpet event and all the staging for the awards show. They honored several people that evening including Keith Urban and Mel Tellis.

Update

Sorry for my lack of blogging. It's been a bit of a jumble lately. Since I updated, we've had a lot going on. Maddie is now serving on the security squad in the mornings at Granbery. She's very proud to have been chosen. (and I am thrilled at having to leave 30 minutes earlier...no seriously, I am. Really.) But isn't she a cutie??

The l'Ete Du Vin Nashville Wine Auction--one of America's oldest and most premier wine auction is one of our clients. Gary and I produced their show . It's always a high society evening filled with great wine and great philanthropy.

Pictured here are Gary Musick, Holly Whaley, and BST. Good friends! Love these guys!

Some of the goods up for auction

Tammy Skeens is one of most awesome production assistants. She is our power point genius!

Mark and Holly Whaley are long time board members for l'Ete Du Vin. Holly and I even ended up working together on the Heart Gala a couple of years. Mark and Holly have become great friends of Sheryl and me.

The Friday before Labor Day all the Gary Musick staff went bowling. crazy people BOWLING!
L-R Jonathan, Melanie, Keith, Bert

Anna Musick and Brandon Scott Thomas...friendly fire. We'll see, smarty Anna, who will emerge the victor!Hmmm....why don;t you ask Anna WHO the victor was???

Jim Sheridan---former creative guy with Jim Henson and the Muppets and other completely cool stuff that he likes to keep mysterious! Jim and Dana are some of the best people we work with.

Anna, Gary, BST, Don, and Jonathan...anyone know who made HIGH score of the DAY? Hmm? Anyone wanna take a gander??????
LABOR DAY!!!!! We had a little family cookout at River Park. It was awesome!!

The explorer in Sam came out that day. He was so cute!

After Labor Day, my buddy Chan's father passed away and I drove to Marshall, TX to be with him and his family. The Channing and Thomas family have walked through a lot together. There's no way to assign value to them in our lives. We just knew that we wanted to be there for them

These are my other girls! Kaitlyn and Shelby are so precious. I love them!

I had to hurry home because I had an important meeting for the Heart Association that I was producing. It was a research reception dinner highlighting and thanking the men and women who give so much to the organization. The event happened at our place. One of the event spaces we manage called "The Berger Building".

There were real human hearts there on display that you could examin and touch with gloves. It was fascinating and amazing to learn some of the new advances.

Human heart, people. A human HEART!

My next little gig was to help Ken Brisbane and Loews Hotels develop and create a festive environment for the ribbon cutting for their new World Headquarters for Loews
Hotels.VIPs cut the ribbon including the CEO of the Loews corporation as well as Nashville's wonderful mayor, Karl Dean
Our ZOE trip to Houston was great. Dustin Gist rocks my world. Love that guy! We got to see a ton of Sheryl's family. Man-it always goes so fast and I wanted to remember to take pictures... but nothing. Sam got cold on the flight. He retreated into his shirt.

I came home to the Gem Cast finishing their run of Colors. They're now starting on Get Down Tonight. They are a great cast and very hard working,

Jasmin looks so great. This is her 3rd contract with us.

The Norwegian Cruise Line GEM Cast
Today was home improvement day for us. cars (and clothes and dishes) washed, rolling the trampoline all the way down the street--saying goodbye to Mr. Trampolini. I pruned my tomato plants, we mulched and painted the mail box.

Not quite sure what to do here......

OOOOOOOOOOhhhh...great idea! I keep saying, "How is this thing really 15 FEET??? Thanks to our neighbor, Ken, this wasn't a complete disaster!

We needed a break by the time we got to the cul-de-sac. We should have just stopped for a block party. I am so sore and tired!

This video features a few of the Gem Singers and a couple of dancers. I love the song! I hope you all have a fantastic weekend and week ahead!

Sheryl

I know for a fact that I have the best wife in the world. Look at her. What's not to love? Thing is...beyond being beautiful on the outside, Sheryl is one amazing person on the inside. There are so many qualities that I lack that she makes up for. She is like a puzzle piece that fits perfectly with me. God teaches me through her. He's transformed many areas of my heart through knowing and loving Sheryl.

Sheryl is teaching pre-school this year at Otter Creek School. She gives all day long and then comes home and gives some more. She's funny, sincere, honest, loving, compassionate, and loves her family. (And...have you HEARD her sing? It's been 18 years since I first heard that voice and I've never gotten over it.) The work of a mom is exhausting. Being a wife to someone like me is also tiring at times. :) Every day I realize more and more how blessed I am to have her in my life.

On this holiday where we celebrate those who "labor" I want to raise my glass to Sheryl. Honey, you ROCK! And to mom's everywhere...thank you for all you do!
